The AdSense ads displayed by Google on your site are matched to Google's interpretation of the content theme of your site. In this manner, the AdSense ads will be of interest to your site visitors looking for the unique content your site offers to them.

AdSense is a system where Google places its AdWords ads on the content pages of non-Google web sites. It is a pay-per-click (PPC) service where webmasters are paid a portion of the revenue collected by Google from the advertisers. The advertiser pays Google a pre-determined amount each time a web site visitor clicks on an AdSense advertisement.

AdWords is the Source of AdSense Income

AdWords ads are the source of all the AdSense income you are able to generate. As a result, you need to fully understand the AdWords system in order to appreciate how the AdSense system works.

Google describes AdWords as "a quick and simple way to purchase highly targeted cost-per-click (CPC) advertising, regardless of your budget." These paid ads (sponsored links) are displayed by Google on the search engine results page along with the non-paid (natural results) for a given keyword search.

In order to create a Google AdWords ad, it is necessary to specify what keyword or keyword phrase must be input by the visitor before your AdWords ad will be displayed. In addition, you need to set the maximum amount that you will pay to Google for each click on your AdWord.

There is a nominal activation fee but Google does not have a minimum monthly charge. Google provides an account Control Center that allows you to track the performance of your ad. The ad will be displayed within minutes to the searchers after your account billing information has been submitted to Google.

AdWords ads must adhere to specific Google requirements. The title can contain up to 25 characters, the ad text can have up to 70 characters and the display URL must be less than 36 characters.

AdWords Ranking

Google will rank an AdWords ad based on the maximum CPC, the click through rate (CTR) and the relevancy of the ad text. Google prefers relevant and well-targeted AdWords ads. Google determines ad placement using the value formula: CPC x CTR. The ad is placed higher as the valuation rises. It’s possible for an advertiser to have a high rank position with a low CPC if the CTR makes the value to Google higher than other ads with a higher CPC.

Google requires a minimum CTR in order to protect the AdWords program value for its users. The CTR of all AdWords ads are monitored by Google on a continuous basis. An under-performing AdWords ad may be disabled by Google if the CTR does not improve.

AdSense Program

You need to apply and be accepted by Google before you can display the AdSense ads on your web site. They are very particular about the sites that are eligible and accepted. Google's name is on the ads and they cannot risk hurting the perceived value of the AdSense and AdWords programs.

Google requires you to comply with their program policies if your website is accepted into the AdSense program. Otherwise, your website may be dropped from the program.

Your site must be content-focused to be accepted. Google wants sites that offer high quality information or rich in relevant content. You should have lots of interesting and informative content for your site visitors.

As previously mentioned, AdSense is a program in which you get paid for your web site visitors clicking on targeted AdWords ads placed on your site. A click through is when a visitor clicks on one of the ads. The ads are placed in a display box that you put on your website in a location that earns you money.

You have a chance to make a significant amount of money if the AdSense box is placed in a strategic location on your site and you have sufficient targeted traffic.

The AdWords advertiser pays as little as $0.05 per click up to $100 per click depending on the unique keywords. The AdWords campaigns are usually budgeted for a specific period of time by the advertisers.

Contextual Advertising

Google uses proprietary algorithms to determine the content on each page of your web site with an AdSense box. It will identify the AdWords ads that are contextually relevant to your website visitors based on the content of your site. The identified AdWords ads are then displayed in your AdSense box. The ads on your site are the same ads that appear on the right side of a Google search results page for a specific keyword.

Contextual advertising is the process of displaying ads on a web site that are targeted to the individuals visiting the specific web site. The Google contextual advertising system scans the content text on your web site for keywords on each web page with the AdSense box. Google will display ads on each web page based on what it believes is the keyword theme for that specific page.

For example, if Google determines that the theme of a specific web site is about "fishing" then fishing-related AdWords ads will be displayed in the AdSense box. The ads about fishing are an approximate fit to the context or subject of the web page as determined by Google.

Monetize Your Content Rich Website

Every webmaster with high-quality and focused web page content can monetize their knowledge and expertise by using AdSense. You need interesting and informative content on your site in order to bring free and targeted traffic to your web site and capitalize on the AdSense model.

You can generate revenue on your AdSense website on a consistent basis if your web site has a focused theme with targeted traffic. It's a good idea to have multiple pages with rich content on various topics that are centered around the specific theme of your website. Google can then target relevant ads to display on each web page that contains the AdSense box.

Google performs all the technological work for you to use the AdSense program. After your web site is accepted into the AdSense program, you obtain the HTML code to insert into your web pages from Google. The code will incorporate whatever specific customization you choose for the AdSense box.

It does not take very long before relevant ads appear on your web pages. If the ads are not relevant then you need to modify your content and keywords to help Google isolate the theme of your site. This will involve trial and error.

AdSense Factor

The items needed (I call it the AdSense Factor) to make substantial money using the AdSense program include:

* A website with multiple web pages with a central content theme that draws significant targeted traffic.

* Relevant ads with high click values that are relevant to the theme on each web page.

* A high click through rate by your website visitors.

Website Central Theme

Your website should be based on a specific theme. This is where brainstorming comes into play. You need to spend ample time determining what the theme of your site should be. Generate a list of all your skills, capabilities and areas of interest as you would in developing a niche market.

Select one or more of the niches and identify a keyword phrase to be the central theme of your web site. Identify the "wants and needs" of individuals in that niche that desire information to be satisfied or produce a solution to a problem. In your brainstorming session, identify all the keywords you can that relate to the central theme.

As an example, assume your central keyword theme is "fishing." Potential supporting keywords could include (depending on the direction you take): fishing rods, lures, tackle, bait, gear, reels, boats and a long list of related items. You then need to develop a separate web page for every keyword item that you use to support the central theme.

Keyword Page Content

Each keyword page needs to have quality content that would be of interest and informative to your prospective visitors looking for information. You can develop the content yourself, use existing free information or pay someone to develop the content for you.

As a starter, you should attempt to generate the content yourself. Research each topic keyword and write articles of 200 to 600 words. The articles should be informative and rich in keywords for each web page with an AdSense box. Remember that "more" is better. The more content-related pages you have then the more AdSense ads you will be able to display and hopefully the more money you will make.

If you believe that you absolutely cannot write articles for whatever reason then look for existing free articles on your web page topic(s). You can also hire a freelance or ghostwriter at very reasonable rates to write articles for you. The choice is yours on how you proceed to get content for your web pages.

When you write your own articles, try to write your articles as if you were talking to someone. Plan on inserting the keyword or keyword phrase in as many places that make sense. The keyword density should be in the 5 to 10% range. This means that the keyword should be included about once every 10 to 20 words in the article. In order to help Google determine the theme for each of your web pages with the AdSense box: use headings and subheadings, use "h1" through "h5" tags where appropriate to add attention and make all keywords bold "b" text in your articles.

Conclusion

You need to consider implementing AdSense on your site if you want to make money from advertising. Google has made it relatively easy and clear to monetize your website through the use of AdSense. The steps involved in the process are:

* First – develop a central keyword theme for your website that contains informative and quality information desired by your targeted visitors.

* Second – develop multiple content rich web pages with individual keyword themes that are focused around your central keyword theme.

* Third - apply and get accepted into the Google AdSense program.

* Fourth - install the AdSense ads box on each content web page with a defined keyword theme.

* Fifth - drive targeted traffic to your website where a percentage of your visitors looking for your informative and quality information will click on the AdSense ads.

* Sixth - collect and enjoy the money paid to you by Google for the clicks on each ad you presented to your visitors.

Keep the "AdSense Factor" in mind when developing your web pages and your visitors will have a high interest in your content. This will lead to your visitors clicking on the AdSense ads and putting money into your pocket.

Copyright (C) 2006 – F. Most of the top affiliate marketers will give you something like this in the members area of their sites.

Do this well and you can go from a 1% conversion on an affiliate sales page to a 10% opt-in on your lead capture page - which do you think will be more profitable for you?

But wait, lead capture pages can also help you generate more affiliate sales. When people opt-in into your list they go to a thank-you page. Lets say you're building a list related to google adsense, the thank-you page will now take your lead straight to your adsense affiliate website, and this sort of highly targeted traffic converts very well.

What's more now you have the e-mail address you can use the autoresponder to follow-up in a few days, so you no longet have to rely on impulse buyers to make your affiliate sales.

So in summary the #1 stategy for list building is find a free gift or educational series related to your niche. Create a page to give this information away, and finally promote this site instead of the affiliate website.

Happy List Building

Andrew Stark has been online marketing since early 2004. This means you need to get your entire site into Google as fast as possible.

Getting Indexed in Google – Quick and Easy

Millions upon millions of dollars have been made by sites getting ranked highly in Google. Of course, these sites are optimized to get the rankings. While optimization is critical, it is also vital that you get all the pages of your site indexed in Google.

The good news is it is fairly easy to get Google to suck up the pages of your site. There are a couple of different ways, but you need to do one thing before worrying about getting indexed.

Site maps are rarely clicked on by most visitors to a site, but they are critical nonetheless. A site map isn’t vital because it helps a visitor get around the site. It is vital because it helps the search engine indexing robots find all the pages on the site. In this case, you want to create a site map for your site to make sure the “Googlebot” finds all the pages you have labored to put up. Google actually has an xml site maps tool, but I prefer to actually make sitemaps since I want Yahoo and MSN to index the site as well.

Once you have a site map, the easiest way to get the attention of Google is to create a free blog. Go to Blogger.com and open a free account. Just follow the three or four simple steps and you will be ready to go. Once the account is open, create your first blog entry. Type anything you want, but make sure to include a link to your home page and your site map in the entry. Hit the enter button and you are on your way. Why? Google owns blogger.com, so it regularly canvases the blogs and links. Within a week or two, your site should start appearing in Google.

A second way to get indexed in Google is to write an article. Create one on a subject relevant to your site. Make it about 400 words long or about a page in length. Open an account with an article directory. The account should be assigned immediately after opening the account. Login and go to your member profile. Add the domain to your site in the appropriate box and save it. Then submit your article. Make sure to include an author byline where indicated and include a link to your site. The Google indexing robot will crawl the site at least once a week, find your links and follow them to your site. Within a few weeks, you should see your site indexed in Google.

You can also add your domain directly to Google, but this is really a waste of your time. So many people do it on a daily basis that it may take three months for Google to get to your site.

You can use any of the above techniques to get the attention of the Google indexing bot. Regardless of how you do it, keep in mind it will take a few weeks for your site to appear. There are millions of sites on the web, so the robot has a lot of ground to cover.

Halstatt Pires is with MarketingTitan.com - providing internet marketing services.

<!--

This headline shouts at you from a new book called “Stumbling on Happiness” by Daniel Gilbert. It's very a very thought-provoking look at how we think about happiness. To be happy, there is something we all want. If you're thinking it's money, you're wrong. It's CONTROL! We all want to control what happens to us and go to great lengths to feel "in control."

For online marketers, this brings up the eternal question, "Who is in control, you or the customer?" With the advent of Web 2.0, I think the answer is the customer. Corporate attorneys aside, the customer needs to feel in control of the buying process from start to finish. New technology allows the customer to weigh-in on every aspect of process.

Take a look at your website from this “control” perspective. Here are five things I recommend you think about to get yourself started in the right direction.

1. Marketing message: Is the message clear? Do you use strong benefit copy? In order to feel in control at the beginning of the buying process, customers need to immediately identify how this product will give them something they want.

2. Product/Service information: Do you provide enough visual information, specs, audio and video about the product? Try to make the customer feel like he has the product in his hand and you are explaining its benefits. Don’t skimp on this. Whatever makes your product unique and desirable should be detailed.

3. Price: Have you made your case for the price? Understand that if you have positioned your product at a higher price, you need to communicate the quality and customer service that comes along with it.

4. Buying process: Is your shopping cart easy to use? Recruit some non-employees to go through the buying process as your team watches. That’s always an eye-opener. You’ll see where the ‘loss of control’ kicks-in.

5. Ongoing communication: After purchasing, a buyer wants to feel in control and glad she made the purchase. “Buyer’s remorse” is just a symptom of not feeling 'in control.' Make sure to follow-up with the customer and reinforce her purchase.

Stephanie Diamond is a 25+ year marketing professional experienced in building profits for a broad range of online businesses. But I have more to say on the subject.

First, let me be clear about what I’m saying here. I’m not talking about long content pages within dozens of other pages on a site. I’m talking about stand-alone pages...a long, direct response sales letter online, often with its own domain name.

Next, let me say this: long copy works, online and offline.

If you can hold someone’s attention with your writing, a long page gives you the space to deliver all the benefits, cover all the features and address a myriad of reader questions and concerns. So long as the letter carries momentum and holds the reader’s attention, people will keep scrolling.

And you’ll get a better conversion rate than you would with a shorter page. This is true offline, and on the web also.

However, what I have found is two distinct approaches to the long, online sales letter. Both work, but do so in different ways.

Long copy style #1: Selling with Hype

You probably know the kind of page I mean. Here’s an example of the kind of copy you can expect:

“Income For Life™ is the same program being praised by the true experts as “...a new breakthrough method that will probably lead more people from broke to millionaire status than ‘Think & Grow Rich,’ ‘Rich Dad, Poor Dad,’ and ‘The Science Of Getting Rich’ Combined!””

The copy style is fast, packed with superlatives, thick with unsupported promises and bulging with testimonials given by people who appear to sprinkle amphetamines on their wheaties.

The template for these sales pages is fairly consistent. Lots of highlighted subheads and indents. A breathless pace...and the promise of a better life. Success. Wealth. Happiness.

Well, we all want to be happy and most of us could do with some extra wealth.

But how is it that this approach works so well? Many of us look at these letters and are incredulous. And many of us would claim never to be persuaded by such an approach. But hundreds of thousands of people are.

How come? This copy approach has a hypnotic quality to it. It makes promises with such strength and enthusiasm. And in some way, it tempts us into a state of submission. We submit to the endless waves of promises and testimonials. We succumb to the thought that maybe, just maybe...this might work...and we might find that extra wealth or happiness.

And yes, even you will turn off your critical faculties from time to time. If you have ever purchased a lottery ticket you have been in this ‘space’...where your desire for a better future overcomes your more rational thinking process. Hey, someone has to win. Right?

The same is true if you have ever felt your brain go soft in the face of an enthusiastic car or electronics salesperson. One half of your brain knows you are being persuaded to buy extra features you don’t need and probably can’t afford. The other part of your brain is whispering in your ear, “Hey man, chill. This feels good. Go with the flow, listen to the man.”

This happens to us when we WANT to hear what we are hearing. When we WANT it to be true. When we allow ourselves to dream.

This is how hype works. It deepens our state of submission and creates a state of almost dreamlike optimism.

And it works.

The significant downside to this approach is that most of us wake up from the dream and find that the promises were empty. Or, to put it another way, we bought the ticket, but didn’t win the lottery.

So if your aim is to build long-term relationships with your readers, prospects and customers, using hype is not the way to go.

Long copy style #2: Selling with a Human Connection

The second style of long copy approach is quite different. Again, these are often stand-alone pages, many screens long. Again, you’ll find the headings, the subheads, indents and testimonials.

But you’ll find a very different approach in the writing style.

If you have ever read a sales letter from Bill Bonner, Ken Evoy or Allan Gardyne... this is the kind of writing I’m talking about.

These are still long, enthusiastic letters...and the pace still draws you down, line after line.

But here are some differences, and they are very significant.

- Within the text you will hear the genuine voice of the writer. You’re not being sold with copy written by the ‘Dream-O-Matic 2000’ – you’re being sold by a recognizable human voice, the voice of Bill, Ken or Allan.

- You are not succumbing to that state of dreamlike submission and suspending your critical faculties. You remain quite rational and quite clear in your thinking.

- You are hearing a voice that sounds and feels infinitely more trustworthy.

- You don’t have to suspend your disbelief. Instead, you feel comfortable and believe what you are reading.

At the end of a letter like this, you make a choice...buy or not to buy. And it’s a choice you are much less likely to regret.

Online sales letters like these are the children of traditional direct response letter writing. Good direct mail letters are written in this second way – by making a genuine connection with the reader and earning his or her trust.

There is a big upside to this second approach. It builds trust and loyalty. If your strategy is to build a list of happy prospects and customers who will come back again and again, this is the style you will want to adopt.

Conclusions

Long copy works, and it works in more than one way.

If you can reach a big enough readership (no small feat) and want to make big money, right now, hype might work for you.

But if you want to build a long-term list of repeat customers... be yourself and write to your audience with an enthusiasm that is built on a foundation of honesty and respect for your readers.

--

Article Resource: If you would like to learn how to write like a traditional direct marketer, read my review of Michael Masterson’s Accelerated Program for Six-Figure Copywriting.

Nick Usborne is a copywriter, author, speaker and advocat of good writing. Here are 10 ways you can do to improve it.
1. Give people a free subscription to your e-zine. Almost everyone is publishing a e-zine nowadays so it's important to give something extra with the free subscription. You could offer a free gift or advertising when people subscribe.

2. Provide your visitors with free content. Your content will be more attractive to your visitors if it's up-to-date or original. You could also offer people the option to reprint the content in their e-zine or web site.

3. Offer a free online directory. The directory could be full of interesting ebooks, e-zines, web sites etc. If people find your directory to be a valuable resource they will visit it over and over.

4. Give your visitors a free ebook. You could also include your own ad in the ebook and allow other people to give it away. If you don't want to take the time to write one, you could ask other writers permission to use their articles.

5. Hold free online classes or seminars. They could be held in your web site's chat room. The idea of "live" information will definitely entice people to visit your web site. You will become known as an expert on the topic.

6. Give visitors a free entry into your contest or sweepstakes. The prizes should be something of interest or value to your visitors. Most people who enter will continually revisit your web site to get the results.

7. Let visitors download free software. It could be freeware, shareware, demos etc. You could even turn part of your site into a free software directory. If you created the software, include your ad inside and let other people give it away.

8. Offer free online services or utilities from your web site. They could be search engine submitting, copy writing proofreading etc. The service or utility should be helpful to your target audience.

9. Give free consulting to people who visit your web site. You could offer your knowledge via e-mail or by telephone. People will consider this a huge value because consulting fees can be very expensive.

10. Give your visitors a free membership to your online club. People want to belong to something, why not your online club. You could also give away a free e-zine for club members only.

The smart way is to get your visitors's name and email address even they do not buy anything from you at first visit. You can put a form on your front page and offer some valuable freebies to let them sign in. Then you can follow up with them with more emails about your product and your company.

Julia Tang publishes "Smart Online Business Tips" Newsletter which helps people to start, run and grow Internet businesses. Very few...

This might not make much sense at face value, why wouldn't you create a web page that is tailored to your visitors? The question is not why wouldn't you, but why aren't you?

If you study the statistics, you can be set free...

The truth of the matter is that most web pages are designed towards what the owner wants, not the user. They focus too much attention on the appearance, or nit pick the details, but fail completely to consider what would cater enough to the visitors.

That is not to say that the design or details are not important, only that at the root of every decision you should ask "Is this what would be best for a visitor of my site?".

Let's start by looking at the appearance

Most designers focus a lot on appearance. In some instances, having a very appealing design is important. Those in the industry of creating design/art, for example. However, people do not visit websites because they look pretty. They visit websites because the site offers services, information, or content that is valuable to them. Because of this, that should be your main focus not the design.

If not the design, what about the copy?

This is where it gets tricky. I already said that the design is not important, the content is. This is true, however most users do not read all of the content on a web page, they simply scan.

So now the design isn't important, and neither is the copy?

Yes and no. The copy is more important than the design, but highlighting and bringing focus to the key information is more important than both. That is why it is very important to take advantage of headings, italics, bold, and color changes to shift focus to the key phrases that you want people to read.

Make your site easy!

Think about the average user of your site, and figure out what they would want to get out of visiting the web page. Then make those elements as easy to get to as possible. This often includes office hours and contact information/forms on every page, a sitemap with detailed information on every page, the first element on a menu is the focus of the site, unburied and featured content, etc...

If you tailor your site to your visitors, it will be a success!

Remember, every decision for your site should be tailored to your target market,
and towards how your target market uses the internet. People want information fast
and easy on the internet, and any time delay will often turn people away and towards
your competitors.

Ross Johnson is co-founder of Ann Arbor Web Design company 3.7 Designs.
